Cool Summer Jobs for High School Students

Cool Summer Jobs for High School Students

| On 30, May 2017

As nice as having nothing to do all summer vacation is, these two months off can also be a great opportunity to make some cash! There are tons of summer jobs offered for high school students throughout Vermont in a variety of fields. If you’re looking to stay busy this summer, be sure to look into these cool employment opportunities!

  • Ice Cream Scooper/Server

If you’re looking to stay cool this summer (and maybe get some free or discounted ice cream), this might be the job for you. Try contacting a local scoop shop or creemee stand like Burlington Bay, Al’s French Fries, The Scoop in Shelburne, or the North Beach Snack Shack in Burlington.

  • Lifeguard

Though you will need to take a class to receive lifeguard certification first, this employment opportunity pays well and means plenty of time soaking up the sun. Check when future lifeguarding classes in Burlington are at the YMCA or American Red Cross. Potential lifeguarding locations may include North Beach, the Burlington YMCA, Shelburne Beach, Vermont National Country Club, Burlington Tennis Club, Burlington Country Club, and more.

  • Day Camp Counselor

For the high school student who loves children, here is an opportunity to spend time with them every day! Try reaching out to a local rec department (South Burlington or Burlington) to see what summer camps they are offering in 2017 and what positions are still needed.

  • Animal Shelter

Who wouldn’t love the chance to get paid to play with cute animals! Reach out to the Humane Society to see if they have any positions available. You can also try working with animals outside of a shelter at Petco or Pet Advantage!

  • Cashier

Keep practicing your math skills all summer long! Contact a local grocery store such as Hannafords, Shaws, or Price Chopper to see if they are hiring.

  • Delivery Driver

A fun position for licensed upperclassmen! Great tips, and an opportunity to get paid for going on drives! Try a local pizzeria such as Domino’s or Junior’s.

  • Babysitter

A classic high school job that is always in high demand! Spread your name around the neighborhood, advertise on social media, and make some posters.

  • Tutor

If you mastered a class this past year, get your name out in the community as a tutor! You never know who may need your assistance. Try putting up posters at local grocery stores and community buildings, you might be surprised with the results!

  • Retail

Another opportunity for employee discounts at your favorite clothing store. Try Old Navy, The Gap, Banana Republic, and any boutique on Church Street!

  • Food Server

A fun way to potentially get an employee discount at your favorite restaurant! Try Chipolte, Panera Bread, Al’s French Fries, Marco’s Pizzeria, and many more.

Another cool alternative to a summer job is an unpaid (or paid) internship. If you are passionate about a particular career path and want to gain some hands-on experience in the field during your time away from school, then this may be the perfect use of your summer vacation. Plus, internships look great on a resume for future employment or college!

For more employment opportunities, be sure to check the CDC Bulletin Board on EDU or outside the SBHS library.
